Serena Williams toes the line in win at U.S. Open

When Williams walked into the world's biggest tennis stadium at 10:31 p.m. in New York, the applause was subdued and Williams was expressionless.

The last time she had played singles on this court, in a 2009 women's semifinal, the night had ended badly. Williams lost to Kim Clijsters and the final point was after a foot fault call went against Williams. She launched into an obscenity-filled tirade against the lineswoman who'd seen Williams' toes cross the line.

Williams did not play here last year because of a foot injury that contributed to keeping her away from tennis for nearly a year. But if the 29-year-old didn't seem outwardly enthusiastic about her late-night arrival, her tennis spoke one word: dominant.

She beat 19-year-old Serbian Bojana Jovanovski, who is ranked 54th in the world, 6-1, 6-1, in 56 minutes.

"I'm glad that one's over," Williams said. "It took a long time."

That sentence seemed to cover both being the last women's first-round singles match played and the time it has taken for Williams to get back here.

"It feels like I'm in my third round already," Williams said. "But it's OK. At least I got one and made it through."

Williams lost the first point on a forehand error but within 10 minutes she was ahead 3-0. There were moments when Williams squealed with disappointment after rare mistakes and one yelped an audible "Come on," when she blasted a winner to take a 5-1 first-set lead, but there were few smiles.

US Open Tennis (2011) Tickets are Hottest Events in September

That’s right, the hottest ticket this fall isn’t to see the Red Sox or the Yankees or even the NFL season kickoff. It’s tennis in New York that remains the top draw in September. The US Open is the final of the four tennis “Grand Slam” events and draw fans from around the world to Flushing, NY.

Fans can usually find US Open tickets in the upper sections of Arthur Ashe Stadium (the main court) for early sessions in the $25 range. Court-side tickets to later sessions can often range from $2,000 – $7,000+ on the ticket market.

As with any hot event, ticket market prices can and do vary significantly — sometimes by hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars for tickets in the same row.

We put together an Insider’s Guide to the US Tennis Open to help tennis fans get to the US Open and get the most bang for the buck.

Prattsville, New York Underwater From Irene Flooding (VIDEO)

Some areas may have been spared from severe damage by Tropical Storm Irene, but inland areas of New York and Vermont are seeing their worst flooding in decades.

The CNN video below shows the damage caused by Irene in the small town of Prattsville, New York. The Catskills town of just over 300 homes was almost entirely underwater when newscasters arrived.

A state police helicopter was needed to rescue over 20 people stranded in the town yesterday, according to CNN.

The town was flooded when a local creek rose over 15 feet in under 12 hours. Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden told CNN that the rainwater spilling off the Catskills sent a volume of water that was greater than Niagara Falls through Prattsville.

According to the Associated Press, continued flooding on bridges and roads has cutoff at least three towns in New York and “some Vermont rivers still haven't reached their peak.” Flooding in Vermont is the worst in a century.

In Bartonsville, Vermont, strong floodwaters carried away a 141-year-old covered bridge as onlookers watched in shock.

African Golden Cat: Rare Footage Of Animal Recorded (VIDEO)

One of Africa's "most elusive" animals has been recorded by scientists, and shared in what may be the only publicly released video, according to CNN.

The African golden cat is extremely reclusive in nature, and thus little is known about its behavior, other than that it feeds mainly on rodents, and is nocturnal.

The footage, which was recorded by a motion-activated camera, could be used along with photos to better understand the species.

Laila Bahaa-el-din, a graduate student leading the study, told CNN what it was like to see the footage for the first time:

According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the African Golden Cat is "listed as Near Threatened as it seems reasonable to believe that the species could have declined on the order of 20% over the course of the last 15 years across its range, due mainly to the impact of habitat loss, hunting and loss of prey base."

In Feburary, scientists used a similar camera to captured footage of four of the world's rarest rhinoceroses in Indonesia.

One of the world's most endangered species, the Javan rhino population is estimated to consist of no more than 50 animals in the Ujung Kulon National Park.

A few weeks ago, endangered cats at the Florida Big Cats rescue had some much-deserved fun in the sun with some giant chew toys and tires.

For some more good news for cats, three adorable baby Asian fishing cats were born in a zoo in Ohio committed to protected endangered species.

Officer Caught In Surveillance Photo Having Sex On Car (Video)

A photo of what appears to be a police officer having sex with a woman on the hood of a car has caused an uproar in New Mexico.

The Huffington Post could not confirm independently that the man in question is a law enforcement officer, but Albuquerque, N.M. TV station KOB 4 and the Albuquerque Journal both identify the man as a uniformed officer.

The Santa Fe Sheriff's office released pictures to KOB in response to a public records request. The photos were taken from security footage at the Santa Fe Canyon Ranch.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Robert Garcia told the Journal that the photos were taken by a camera set up to catch graffiti taggers or other crimes.

An email and phone call to the New Mexico State Police were not immediately returned to HuffPost.

Other uniformed policeman have been caught having sex on the job. Earlier this month, a Louisiana state public safety officer was suspended for reportedly having sex in his patrol car.

In January, a veteran officer resigned after he allegedly did the deed in his cruiser.

New Mexico State Police have not said whether the man pictured on the hood of the car will face any disciplinary measures, according to the Journal.

Justin Bieber's Snake Is Named 'Johnson' (Photo & Video)

Perhaps you heard that Justin Bieber brought a date to the MTV Video Music Awards last night?

No, it wasn't girlfriend Selena Gomez, although she was there too. The 17-year-old singer who picked up the award for Best Male Video brought along a snake -- named 'Johnson.'

The object of affection for teen girls worldwide, showed up to his pre-show interview with Selena Gomez with his special friend.

Gomez asked Bieber to talk about what he was wearing and to "please talk about this," pointing to the baby boa constrictor he held in his hand. When he thrust it towards her, Gomez -- who was visibly grossed out shouted, "Stop! I know."

Bieber then gave his girlfriend an inventory of what he was wearing and told her his snake's name was "Johnson."

It's pretty amusing watching the couple try to keep it professional, but at the end of the interview Bieber swoops in and leaves his girlfriend with a little kiss.

If nothing else this little stunt with the snake just proves that Bieber really is a 17-year-old boy.

Dangerous, Stupid Train Stunt The Reason Ridiculous Train Warnings Exist (VIDEO)

Ever wonder why transportation companies have those dopey warnings about not riding on top of the train or not urinating on the electrified rail? That's probably because people like this exist. Sure, they don't die or even seem to get injured, but one wrong move heads could have literally rolled.

Long story short, do not try this ever... and we mean ever.

Unfortunately, March's "Jam (Turn It Up)" didn't quite earn an audience following, and her video was denied its moment in the spotlight. Now Perez Hilton has posted a leaked clip from the never-before-seen music video, and judging from 54-second footage -- which features bubble-gum pink hot pants, sticky lip gloss, and some serious, panic attack-inducing strobe lights -- we understand why.

Sam Bradford Makes Girl Cry After Rams Preseason Game (VIDEO)

Step aside Mark Sanchez, it looks there's another young heartthrob NFL quarterback and his name is Sam Bradford.

After Friday's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, some of the Rams staff members were able to make a female fan very, very happy. The girl gave an employee her sign that read, "Marry Me Bradford" and gave it to the 23-year-old to sign. Bradford gladly autographed the sign and when the girl got it back, she became overwhelmed with tears. Well done, Sam.

Sometimes athletes just have that kind of influence over a fan. Just last month, Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett gave a kid a ball before the game and made him so happy that he started hysterically crying.

MTV VMAs 2011: Kanye West and Jay-Z's 'surprise' performance

It was maybe the worst-kept secret of the 2011 Video Music Awards: Kanye West and Jay-Z took the stage for a "surprise" performance of their song "Otis" early in Sunday's (Aug. 28) show.

Which doesn't mean it was any less fun to watch. Live hip-hop can sometimes be an iffy proposition, but these two guys know how to command a stage as well as anyone, and they did exactly that.

And there actually was one surprise: A fan jumped on stage behind them in the middle of their performance, prompting a quick response from the VMA security team. Neither rapper seemed thrown off by the distraction, though.

Video of the performance is below. We'll post the full, official version when it becomes available.

Wiz Khalifa & Amber Rose at 2011 MTV VMAs

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose hit the black carpet of the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards at Nokia Theatre (August 28, 2011) in Los Angeles, California, and added yet another lip locking photo to their collection.
This may sound redundant but I swear every time I see a Wiz and Amber photo, I hear his voice in my head… “shout out to Am.. shout out to Am”.
But I digress…
Wiz’s lucky arm piece didn’t come through for his tonight though, after Tyler the creator beat him out of that “New Artist” VMA, but he at least he has Amber to make him feel a lil better tonight.

In honor of what would have been Michael Jackson's 53rd birthday, ongoing activities continue through today as part of The Legend's Weekend at 2300 Jackson Street, Michael's boyhood home.

Tyler the Creator Wins Best New Artist at 2011 MTV VMAs

Odd Future's frontman Tyler, the Creator didn't pull out the hysterics and wild antics during his acceptance speech, but instead decided to keep it a little less dramatic as he accepted the Moonman for Best New Artist.

The 'Yonkers' creator walked onstage with his rap crew, after his mother showed added enthusiasm by jumping in the air and yelling out congratulations for her son. From Foster the People with 'Pumped Up Kicks,' Wiz Khalifa for 'Black and Yellow,' Big Sean featuring Chris Brown in 'My Last' and Kreayshawn for 'Gucci Gucci,' Tyler snagged one of the most coveted nods of the night.

Though he said he didn't write an acceptance speech, the California native shared his excitement for actually attending the show itself as he couldn't believe he was in attendance. He left the stage with some motivating words, letting kids tuned in know that they could someday stand in his position if they followed their dreams.

Tune in for all VMA 2011 news.

'Punk'd' Returns: Justin Bieber Reportedly Pranks Pal Taylor Swift

MTV's "Punk'd" is back -- but don't go looking for Ashton Kutcher and his trucker hat this time around.

The popular hidden camera show is reportedly returning with a revamped format -- with Kutcher as an executive producer -- and will feature different celebrity pranksters.

According to Access Hollywood, Justin Bieber gets to pull the first prank. But who's the unsuspecting target?

The site reports that Bieber's good friend Taylor Swift is on the receiving end of the yet-to-be revealed practical joke for the first new episode, which was filmed last week.

Showing up unexpectedly happens to be something Bieber is pretty good at -- he's kind of known for crashing his friend's concerts and events.

Just last week, Bieber surprised fans at Swift's LA concert by joining the country singer on stage for a duet of his hit single, "Baby."

Justin Bieber Thanks God For Best Male At VMAs

Eminem showed no fear last year at the MTV Video Music Awards, nabbing Best Male Video for "Not Afraid" over Drake, Usher and B.o.B. But in 2011, fearless, lie-loving Eminem was no match for the feverish smile of Justin Bieber.

The Biebs took home the win for "U Smile," winning out over Em's "Love the Way You Lie," Cee Lo Green's "F--- You," Bruno Mars' "Grenade" and Kanye West's "All of the Lights."

After presenter Kim Kardashian announced his name, Bieber popped up, snagged a smooch with girlfriend Selena Gomez, and headed up onstage, where he delivered a heartfelt message about the role of a higher power in his ascendance to the top of the young pop crop.

"I just want to say thank you so much, not only to God but to Jesus," Bieber said. "Because I wouldn't be here without Him. He's really blessed me. He's put me in this position. So I want to say thank you so much."

The win marked two Moonmen in two years for Bieber, who nabbed Best New Artist for "Baby" at the 2010 VMAs (besting Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj and Jason Derülo) and who is quickly making certain his name and music are deeply engrained in the MTV award show. Last year, of course, Bieber opened the VMAs with a medley outside in Nokia Plaza. This time around, he skipped a performance but still found himself at the center of the action inside the theater.

"Also, I want to say thank you to all the other nominees," Bieber said. "They were amazing. I'm a true fan of all of them, so I want to share this award with all them. You guys are amazing."

Australian 'Free Runner' In Closest Of Close Shaves With Train

An Australian man has narrowly avoided being hit by a train by the smallest of margins while attempting to run across the tracks.

The man was apparently running across the tracks on purpose as some kind of 'free running' stunt.

And in what might be the nearest-ever miss of this kind posted to YouTube, the man can be seen avoiding the oncoming train by inches, if that.

The CCTV footage has been released by Australian authorities to stop anyone else from trying the same thing. We suspect that if they view this video they may well agree to stay at home.

Cat Vs. Dog Duel (VIDEO)

In this video, two old foes meet up for one final duel on the lawn.

This dog and cat know each other well -- and they've obviously memorized each other's every move -- but only one will reign victorious and be crowned champion of the yard.

Take Buzzfeed's advice and watch this video while listening to the song from "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly." It really kicks it up a notch.

Why can't these longtime enemies just get along, like these guys?

WATCH 'Party Down' Cast Reunites On Adult Swim Video

"Childrens Hospital" and "Party Down" have always shared similar DNA: both shows star (or starred) Ken Marino and Megan Mulally, and shared several guest stars, such as Lizzy Caplan. But in last night's episode, "Childrens Hospital" finally went all the way and featured a 35-second cameo appearance from Marino, Mulally and Caplan, as well as Martin Starr and Ryan Hansen, all playing their "Party Down" characters catering a bar mitzvah.

Since Starz canceled "Party Down" after two seasons in April 2010, the show has amassed a cult following, and a "Party Down" movie appears to be in the works as well. In a recent interview with The A.V. Club, Martin Starr (who also stars on "Childrens Hospital" spinoff "NTSF:SD:SUV::") said of the creators and stars, "We’re putting more pressure on ourselves than anybody else would. I think they want it. I mean, it’d be amazing if we could, by January or February."

Are you as refreshed as we are to see Ron Donald and crew again as we are?

Hurricane Irene 2011: More Than 2 Million People Told To Move To Safer Places

As the storm's outermost bands of wind and rain began to lash the Outer Banks of North Carolina, authorities in points farther north begged people to get out of harm's way. The hurricane was still packing 100 mph winds late Friday, and officials in the Northeast, not used to tropical weather, feared it could wreak devastation.

"Don't wait. Don't delay," said President Barack Obama, who decided to cut short his summer vacation by a day and return to Washington. "I cannot stress this highly enough: If you are in the projected path of this hurricane, you have to take precautions now."

Senior hurricane specialist Richard Pasch of the National Hurricane Center said there were signs that the hurricane may have weakened slightly, but strong winds continued to extend 90 miles from its center.

The moment Saturday when the eye of the hurricane crosses land "is not as important as just being in that big swath," Pasch said. "And unfortunately, it's a big target."

Hurricane warnings were issued from North Carolina to New York, and watches were posted farther north, on the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard off Massachusetts. Evacuation orders covered at least 2.3 million people, including 1 million in New Jersey, 315,000 in Maryland, 300,000 in North Carolina, 200,000 in Virginia and 100,000 in Delaware.

"This is probably the largest number of people that have been threatened by a single hurricane in the United States," said Jay Baker, a geography professor at Florida State University.

WATCH Rugby Match Explodes Into Huge Brawl Video

Anyone who plays rugby will tell you that it's a gentleman's game. Players will beat the hell out of each other for roughly 80 minutes and then grab a beer and laugh about it afterward. But there's nothing gentlemanly about this fight between Melbourne and Manly (really, that's their name) in the National Rugby League.

Any sports fight is generally entertaining, but the ferocity of this fight in conjunction with the announcers play-by-play simply makes this brawl top notch.

The video begins with a few punches thrown between the teams during a break in the action. But things quickly escalate after the fight is broken up and Glenn Stewart begins jawing with Adam Blair near midfield. The players quickly begin exchanging punches (to the tremendous delight of one fan, who can be heard cackling at the :35 mark of the video), and then, as the announcer says, "Here come the reinforcements!"

From there, for lack of the better term, a scrum breaks out.

Interestingly, Blair is sent off even though he didn't throw the first punch in his confrontation with Stewart. Or as it's expertly described, "What's [Adam Blair] done? Head butted the fist of an opponent?"

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the fight: Just minutes before it began, members of the Melbourne squad showed great sportsmanship in supporting a Manly player who suffered a neck injury until medical help could arrive.

Manly ended up winning the match 18-4, and we're going to guess that the teams decided to skip out on that friendly beer after the game.

Justin Bieber suprise Taylor Swift on a Concert in Los Angeles

Taylor Swift’s concert at LA’s Staples Center — the one and only Justin Bieber.

The audience reacted with squeals of delight when Swift brought her mega-star friend on stage to perform a duet of his hit song, “Baby,” with her.

And the crowd went wild.

Their song choice doesn’t come as a surprise, however. According to Billboard, Swift covered Bieber’s “Baby” during her shows in Montreal and Toronto in July.

Robert Andino Barehanded Catch: Orioles Player Makes Amazing Grab (VIDEO)

They may not score a whole bunch of runs, but you have to admire the Orioles for scoring some style points during this play.

In the bottom of the 6th inning of Wednesday's game against the Twins, Orioles shortstop Robert Andino gave chase to a foul ball. After getting underneath the pop up, Andino appeared to readjust his body and make an unbelievable barehanded catch.

After a couple of glances, it appears that Andino may have been unnecessarily showboating on the play -- if he had dropped the ball we're sure the announcers would have commented on the fact that he probably could have used his club--but the Orioles are currently sitting 27.5 games back of the New York Yankees in the AL East, maybe they should start trying to put on a show for the fans.

Baltimore held on to win the game, and the play made SportsCenter's top 10 plays.

Full Contact Travel: Muay Thai Training In Thailand (VIDEO)

Muay Thai is always tough, but the martial art is at it's toughest in Thailand, where the sport was invented. Doug "Sticky Rice" Czajka, a Raleigh, North Carolina native had been training in his home town for years when he decided to make some full contact travel plans.

He signed up with MMT Tours in association with My Muay Thai, a new travel company with a focus on exploring Thailand's fight culture.

Despite his nickname, Doug had never traveled outside of the United States, but any apprehension was put aside at the thought of getting into the ring with the world's best Muay Thai fighters like Champion Kem Sitsongpeenong.

The idea of travel fighting isn't new, but providing aspiring Muay Thai fighters with the chance to tour and visit multiple camps in one organized trip is. Sort of a "try before you buy" format that MMT Tours had to convince the camps was a good idea.

Learning about the origins of a mixed martial art goes beyond hitting up multiple camps and has to entail learning about the culture and people. Think of Discovery Channel's show Fight Quest.

Some of the locations seen in the video are the ancient capitol of Siam Ayutthya, Wat Pho the "Temple of the reclining Buddha", Wat Arun the "Temple of the Dawn" and a pad thai food joint called Thip Samai, aka the "Ghost Door" Pad Thai.

NYC Hurricane: Obama Declares Emergency For New York As Hurricane Irene Approaches

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama has declared an emergency for New York state in anticipation of Hurricane Irene, which has New York City in its sights as it storms up the Eastern Seaboard.

The declaration means that the Homeland Security Department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency can coordinate disaster relief efforts. It also means the state can receive federal aid to supplement state and local emergency and cleanup assistance.

The declaration is specifically intended to alleviate the threat of a catastrophe in the counties of Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, Nassau and Suffolk.

The brunt of the storm is expected to hit the New York City area and Long Island on Sunday.

The hurricane threatens up to 65 million people along a path from North Carolina to New England.

Mitt Romney Dismisses Secret Corporate Contributions: 'No Harm, No Foul' (VIDEO)

WASHINGTON -- In a town hall event on Wednesday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney dismissed a question about the controversy over a mystery $1 million contribution made through a dummy corporation by telling the questioner, "No harm, no foul."

The controversy over the contribution erupted after the pro-Romney Super PAC Restore Our Future, which is run by top former Romney campaign workers, revealed that one of its donors was an unknown company called W Spann LLC. An investigation by NBC discovered that W Spann was formed one month before it made the $1 million contribution and then dissolved a few months later. Calls for an investigation by campaign finance watchdogs pushed former Bain Capital executive Ed Conard to reveal that he was the source of the contribution. Restore Our Future has since amended its filing to show that Conard made the $1 million contribution and not W Spann.

Romney's response to the question appears to show that the candidate knows a little bit about Conard's intentions:

Romney's statements ignore most of the record of the controversy over Conard's contribution through the W Spann corporation and could raise new questions about his knowledge of the contribution from Conard. It is illegal for political action committees, like Restore Our Future, to coordinate with candidate campaign committees. It would also be illegal for Romney to have solicited a contribution of more than $5,000 for Restore Our Future.

Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer previously said in a statement, "These Super PACs are nothing more than shadow arms of a presidential campaign that provide a vehicle for massive circumvention and evasion of the contribution limits applicable to donations made directly to a presidential candidate’s campaign committee."

Hurricane Irene 2011: Storm Barrels Toward East Coast, Governors Declare Emergencies

BUXTON, N.C. -- A monstrous Hurricane Irene tightened its aim on the Eastern Seaboard on Thursday, threatening 65 million people along a shore-hugging path from North Carolina to New England. One of the nation's top experts called it his "nightmare" scenario.

The Category 3 storm with winds of 115 mph – the threshold for a major hurricane – would be the strongest to strike the East Coast in seven years, and people were already getting out of the way.

Tens of thousands fled North Carolina beach towns, farmers pulled up their crops, and the Navy ordered ships to sea so they could endure the punishing wind and waves in open water.

All eyes were on Irene's projected path, which showed it bringing misery to every city along the I-95 corridor, including Washington, New York and Boston. The former chief of the National Hurricane Center called it one of his three worst possible situations.

"One of my greatest nightmares was having a major hurricane go up the whole Northeast Coast," Max Mayfield, the center's retired director, told The Associated Press.

Selena Gomez Raps Nicki Minaj's 'Super Bass' Live In Toronto (VIDEO)

Singer and actress Selena Gomez has been touring across the country this summer promoting her new album "When The Sun Goes Down," but she's been getting attention for just about everything but performing her own songs.

The "Wizards of Waverly Place" star has worked a couple of covers into her act and fans seems to be more impressed with those tunes.

Earlier in the summer Gomez showed off some awkward dance moves in a mashup of Britney Spears' songs, and now she's taken her rap skills to the stage.

Gomez must be a huge fan of Nicki Minaj's hit song "Super Bass" because she posted a backstage video of herself rapping along to the CD on YouTube earlier this year.

And now Gomez was convinced into showing off her skills during an interview with Much Music in Toronto on Wednesday. Keeping up with her squeaky clean image, Gomez even changed Minaj's lyrics a little, to get rid of the drug references.

With a premise that harkens back to "Never Been Kissed," comes a new adults-in-high-school movie, "Stay Cool."

The comedy is about a writer (Mark Polish) who returns to his alma mater as commencement speaker and is urged to "connect" with the class.

He ends up catching the eye of a sexy student (Hilary Duff), a situation which is made worse once his high school crush (Winona Ryder) comes back on the scene.

'Spider-Man' Impostor Terrorizes Poland (VIDEO)

Spider-Man spends his costumed hours patrolling and defending his beloved home city of New York, warding off enemies varying from cackling goblins to scientists-turned-mecha octopi. His benevolence, however, does not seem to extend all the way to Poland.

In this amusing new video, a less-than-super webhead galavants around Warsaw, kind of climbing poles, annoying his fellow citizens with rope and silly string. Which, because we aren't there, is absolutely hilarious, and would be a more than acceptable substitute for the star-crossed Spider-Man broadway musical.

Denmark Claims The Arctic Seabed, Goes After North Pole Video

The North Pole is home to 13% of the world's undiscovered oil reserves, and roughly a third of natural gas deposits lie under the Arctic. These U.S. Geological Survey figures might explain why a group of countries known as the Arctic Five -- Russia, Norway, Canada, the U.S. and Denmark are strategically battling out the future of the natural resource-rich waters.

The most recent to eye the delicate region? Denmark, Greenland, and the Farou Islands. AFP reports the Danish government Monday presented its "Arctic Strategy" from 2011-2020, laying out its intentions to claim the North Pole seabed by 2014 at the latest. Business Insider explains the plan would extend their current ownership to northern Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory.

Under international law, no country actually owns the Arctic Ocean or the North Pole. But, according to the U.N. Convention Of The Sea, countries bordering the Arctic are currently entitled to a 200 nautical mile economic zone from their coastlines, and if a country can prove an extended continental shelf, they'll gain sovereignty of up to 350 miles.

Ontario Storm: Lightning vs. The CN Tower (VIDEO)

If you were hiding under your sheets or taking cover in your basement you might've missed the show above the skies of the Greater Toronto Area. A massive storm brought plenty of rain and lightning.

Environment Canada also issued tornado warnings for large parts of southern Ontario, but thankfully no known twisters touched down and caused damage in populated areas.

If you lived in Toronto you might've been lucky to catch the light show, particularly the gasp-inducing sight of the CN Tower being struck by lightning repeatedly.

At more than 1,800 feet high, the tower is easily the tallest building in Toronto and is struck by lightning around 40 to 50 times a year. Last night's storm probably contributed a great deal to this year's quota.

These two videos captured the sight:

The first captures a panorama of Toronto's skyline from slightly further away. In the time-lapse you can see the tower get hit at least half-a-dozen times.

Polar Sea Ice May Expand Before It Disappears Video

Arctic sea ice is melting, but don't say goodbye just yet. A new study reveals that it may temporarily stop melting--or even expand--during the next several decades.

Scientists with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) found that the melting Arctic sea ice may see periods of stability and growth as it disappears.

According to Jennifer Kay, the study's lead author, atmospheric conditions, like wind patterns, will vary enough in the coming decades to slow the rate of melting for up to 10 year periods. The good news comes in the wake of last month's observation that Arctic sea ice levels were the lowest for any July since 1979.

But Kay told the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) that these trends would not be permanent. “when you start looking at longer-term trends, 50 or 60 years, there’s no escaping the loss of ice in the summer," she said.

Kay's team found that “sea ice loss observed in recent decades cannot be explained by natural causes alone, and that the ice will eventually disappear during summer if climate change continues."

According to CBS News "summertime ice in the Arctic has shrunk by about a third since 1979."

About half of the sea ice loss in recent years can be blamed on human activity, the study found.

Brooklyn tattoo shop are signing up to have “Survived the Quake” inked on their skin – even though the design was offered as a joke.Getting the black logo will hurt more than Tuesday’s tremor, which did little more in New York than rattle some nerves.

Khay wasn’t the only person in the country to turn the quake into commerce. Commemorative T-shirts popped up on the Internet within hours.Of course, the buyers can take those off.Although Berg was the first taker at Citizen Ink, three other people have asked for the quake tat, which was first reported by the blog Sheepshead Bites.”It’s not the weirdest thing I have tattooed on people,” Khay said with a grin. “I just thought it would be a good laugh.”

Diamond Planet Discovered – Video

Scientists say the planet exists about 4,000 light years away from Earth, and is probably the remnants of a once-large dead star.

As to what the diamond planet looks like, Ben Stappers of the University of Manchester told The Macadonean International News Agency (MINA) it’s probably not what everyone pictures: “I don’t know I could even speculate. I don’t imagine that a picture of a very shiny object is what we’re looking at here.”

Astronomers detected a similar planet in December 2010, only 1,200 light years away.

World Trade Center Memorial Guide Of Names Debuts As iPhone App

NEW YORK (AP) -- The arrangement of nearly 3,000 names at the World Trade Center memorial is now available as a free iPhone app, memorial officials said Wednesday.

The guide to the names, which includes biographical information about the victims and pinpoints the location of each name at the memorial, was placed online in May. It will be available on electronic kiosks when the memorial opens next month, on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Joe Daniels, president and CEO of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, briefed reporters about progress at the site during a New York Press Club tour that also featured a talk by trade center developer Larry Silverstein.

WATCH: Gaddafi's Secret Bunkers Revealed Video

Libyan rebels who have seized Muammar Gaddafi's sprawling Bab al-Aziziya compound have already made several questionable discoveries -- among them a photo album dedicated to former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Now the group has begun descending into a labyrinth of secret tunnels that lie beneath the compound, revealing even more about the Libyan leader's eccentricities.

The bunkers, said to stretch for miles beyond the compound's confines under the Libyan capital, were discovered after fierce fighting with pro-Gaddafi forces. As Bloomberg is reporting, the air-conditioned passages were fortified in an effort to protect Gaddafi in the aftermath of the 1986 U.S. bombing raid on Tripoli.

NPR quotes an Al Jazeera correspondent as saying that rebels found gas masks and food inside the tunnels, while other reports showed rooms filled with telephones, notebooks and computer servers. A Olympic size swimming pool is also reputedly part of the network.

Take a look inside the secret bunkers via this CBS video below:

A Ride In This Epic 'Space Balloon' Costs Over $150,000

Zero2Infinity, a Spanish startup, has entered the space race...with a balloon.

Or a "bloon," to be more specific. And, unlike Virgin Galactic's SpaceShip2, the race is to "near space," not outer space, something Jose Mariano Lopez-Urdiales, the company's CEO, argues is even better.

"It's not about the prestige, it's the view from up high that people want to see," Lopez-Urdiales told The Daily Mail. "There will be many people who will want to go on the trip."

Near space is generally defined as the area between 65,000 and 325,000 feet (20 and 100 kilometers) above sea level, and lies between airspace and outer space.

Hurricane Irene Batters Smaller Islands Of Bahamas Video

There were no immediate reports of major injuries or deaths but property damage appeared likely to be extensive on Acklins and Crooked islands, in the southern part of the chain, said Capt. Stephen Russell, director of the country's National Emergency Management Agency.

A settlement known as Lovely Bay was destroyed while at least 40 homes were badly damaged on the island of Mayaguana, the agency said. Authorities were still gathering damage reports and there were few details on the destruction.

Mexican Casino Attack: At Least 40 Dead In Monterrey

MONTERREY, Mexico -- Two dozen gunmen burst into a casino in northern Mexico on Thursday, doused it with gasoline and started a fire that trapped gamblers inside, killing 40 people and injuring a dozen more, authorities said.

The fire at the Casino Royale in Monterrey, a city that has seen a surge in drug cartel-related violence, represented one of the deadliest attacks on an entertainment center in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against drug cartels in late 2006.

"This is a night of sadness for Mexico," federal security spokesman Alejandro Poire said in a televised address. "These unspeakable acts of terror will not go unpunished."

Calderon tweeted that the attack was "an abhorrent act of terror and barbarism" that requires "all of us to persevere in the fight against these unscrupulous criminal bands."

Nuevo Leon state Attorney General Leon Adrian de la Garza said authorities had located about 40 bodies "but we could find more." He said a drug cartel was apparently responsible for the attack. Cartels often extort casinos and other businesses, threatening to attack them or burn them to the ground if they refuse to pay.

State police officials quoted survivors as saying armed men burst into the casino, apparently to rob it, and began dousing the premises with fuel from tanks they brought with them. The officials were not authorized to be quoted by name for security reasons. De la Garza said the liquid appeared to be gasoline.

With shouts and profanities, the attackers told the customers and employees to get out. But many terrified customers and employees fled further inside the building, where they died trapped amid the flames and thick smoke that soon billowed out of the building.

Video footage showed workers continuing to remove bodies well into the night.

Monterrey Mayor Fernando Larrazabal said many of the bodies were found inside the casino's bathrooms, where employees and customers had locked themselves to escape the gunmen.
