Jaguars Release Starting QB David Garrard

David Garrard, the starting QB for the Jacksonville Jaguars for the last five years, has been released, according to Fox’s Jay Glazer. That’s a pretty shocking move days before the Jags’ season opener against the Tennessee Titans. In 2008, Garrard signed the richest contract in the history of the franchise – 7 years, $60 million. Garrard was slated to make $7.9 million this season, and perhaps the Jags figured it didn’t make sense to pay him like that since he’s only going to be a bridge to rookie Blaine Gabbert.

Glazer reports that Luke McCown, who has five NFL starts in his career – he arrived in Cleveland in 2004 – will get the nod against Tennessee. The Jaguars weren’t expected to do much this season, and now that they’ll be led by McCown – who knows, maybe Gabbert will get some run – you can go ahead and further lower those expectations.
